A great way to get things you need without paying anything is through a site called Freecycle. You sign up on your local list and check the postings for things you need. People will post items they want to give away. There is no exchange of money on Freecycle. It is all trade or free. You will have to pick the item up, but it's better than paying loads of money for it! I have friends that have found loads of stuff with great success.
