Tip # 62 Hurricane Preparedness

A great way for us southerners to save money is to stock up on items for the hurricane season. I know from experience that prices go up when the threat of a hurricane is announced.

Many places say you should have 48 - 72 hours worth of food and water. I like to keep a weeks worth since I live in Florida and have a 75% chance of losing electricity for several days. Three years ago our electric was out for 3 days and we used the BBQ to cook water and food.

You never know how long the power will be out, so be prepared. Here is a minimal list of supplies you should have for the season.

Water - 1 gallon per person per day ( have at least 3 days worth)
Food - Canned meats, fruit, and veggies ( have at least 3 days supply)
First Aid Kit - Keep it well stocked
Non Prescription Meds - Aspirin, antacids, anti-diarrhea, syrup of ipecac
Supplies - radio, batteries, flashlight, can opener, fire extinguisher, pliers, tape, aluminum foil, tarp, paper, pens, wrench, matches, map of area, cash ( no ATM's in a blackout!!)
Sanitation - Toilet paper, soap, feminine products, deodorant, bucket, bleach, trash bags, baby wipes
Clothing/Bedding - 3 day supply of clothing, Boots, rain gear, hats, gloves, sunglasses, blankets, pillows
Special items - glasses, contacts, prescription meds, heart monitor, insulin, baby products
Pets - crates/cages, bedding, meds, water, food (1 week supply)

Also, keep your family documents together and easy to take with you. Keep them in a container or bag that will prevent water damage.

Be prepared and save!

Happy Saving!!

Great tip Melinda! Thankfully it's not the hurricanes we have to worry with, but the tornadoes are just as bad.

Thanks! Keep up the great work! Blessings!
