Tip # 41 Low Cost Flea Control

It's that time of year....Flea Season. We have a horrible flea problem in Florida. It just doesn't get cold enough in the winter to kill those pesky pests!

We used to go to the vet and pay for the back of the neck flea control, but with 5 pets, it got costly. We were paying almost $75 a month just on flea control! So, I looked around and researched ways to keep the fleas under control without breaking the bank.

The first thing is to bathe your pets. We found a great shampoo by Zodiac that kills the fleas during the bath. We bathe the dogs and cats once a month during flea season. It costs us about $6 a month.

Then we use a natural flea control powder called Flea Away. I purchased it at the organic market. You massage it onto the areas of the the skin that the flea travels. When the flea gets the powder on it, it starts to dry the skeleton out. Then they die. It cost about $15 but lasts us about 3 months.

Then I make sure to wash all bedding in hot water once a week. This ensures any flea eggs that are living on them don't hatch and make the problem worse.

And last, vacuum regularly. I vacuum every day due to dog hair, but I also make sure I get behind furniture and at the baseboards regularly to keep fleas away.

It seems like a lot of work, but it's worth it. It keeps us from having to bomb the house, or spend money on flea dips.

For about $12 a month and a little extra work, we have great flea control for 5 pets!!

Happy Saving!
